Chinese Regional Minority Costumes

There are over 40 Chinese Regional Minority Costumes available from CTAC for educational use. These costumes are wonderful, colorful, and can add an exciting presentation to your chapter or region. What you will see here are a number of them that can be used for your activities. At the end of the list, you will see an order form and information on how to contact CTAC to get these. This is a long document with over 40 pictures so it will take a while to load.

Hui female photo

The Hui nationality in Yunan Province has a population of nearly 500,000. They are scattered throughout 128 counties and municipalities of Yunan. They tend to live in compact communities. The Hui people practice the Islam religion, using some of the Arabic language for their religious activities. Their primary language is now Mandarin, but many things are written in both forms. Their homes and clothes these days resemble the Han nationality. Their major festivals include the Festival of Fastbreaking and the Corban. The also celebrate the birthday of Mohammed, the founder of Islam Religion.

These people are similar to the Uygur. Language, clothing and customs are common to each group. They live in the same general area of China.

Nearly one quarter of a million Naxi people live in a small area in Yunan Province in southern China.

The Miao Nationality live in Yunan Province. There are about 750,000 Miao people living there, scattered throughout 87 counties and communities of Yunan. The largest group lived in the mountainous area of the Wenshan Zhuang-Miao Autonomous Prefecture. Their language is unique, being derived from the Miao-Yao language base. They did not have a written language for many centuries. The Miao grow rice, millet, and buckwheat. The women are expert at weaving, batik, and embroidery. The Miao Brocade is rich in colors with exquisite design.

Their clothing tends to be light in color, as well as light weight to help cope with the warm weather of their region. They celebrate a traditional festival on the fifth day of the first lunar month, called Hua Shan Jie.
