PLANNING MEETING FOR

ANNUAL CHINA SYMPOSIUM 2005

(Symposium scheduled Sat. afternoon, 10/29, at College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn)

At the October 16 Chapter meeting we will be planning for executing our Chapter’s Annual China Symposium 2005, for the date and venue referenced in the heading above.  You should receive, separately, the SAVE THE DATE registration and Speaker Chart describing this year’s Symposium; please consider attending and sending in your advance reservation for the Symposium.

Also, whether Chapter member or friend, please consider attending the 10/16 Chapter Meeting to find out the different activities and responsibilities that are available to help out, so that you can consider which you might wish to volunteer for on Oct. 29 and in the period leading up to the Symposium.

Last September’s Events.  The Chicago Chapter’s September 18 festivity, THE AUTUMN MOON FESTIVAL, AS THE ANCIENT CHINESE CELEBRATED IT, held from 7:30-9 pm at Ping Tom Park, on the Chicago River in Chinatown, was a tremendous success, for the nucleus of members and friends who attended, after having delicious “mooncakes” and hearing Board member Undine Johnson’s thoroughgoing explanation of how to do it right, at the revised Chapter meeting time of 5-7 p.m.  By way of example, Chapter President Roger Noback read English translations of some Li Po and a selection of other ancient Chinese poems, and Board Member Shi Han regaled the assembled multitude (including his wife Jing Li and 2 young children, Justin and Helen) by repeating such poems (and some others) in Chinese, both from memory and using a book with Chinese text, with dramatic flourish.  Appropriate beverages (including soda for the kids) was provided by the Chapter, and the Moon fully cooperated, to frame the occasion in our collective memories.  Stay tuned, and, next year, be there, or be square [and next year, apple juice for the children, at their request.].

The Chicago Chapter played a helpful role for the Concert to Commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Victory of WWII which was held Saturday, Sept. 24, 7-9 p.m. at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, Northwestern University, and organized by Janice Yang, President of Yellow River Performing Arts, U.S., who played the ancient Zhong (Chinese Harp) during the reception at the Chapter’s Annual China Symposium 2004, and will again do so at the Annual China Symposium 2005.  At President Noback’s invitation, long time Chapter member Gene Bonk rounded up surviving members of his China-Burma-India WWII Veteran’s Association (including USCPFA-Chi. Chapter Board Member, Bill Miller) to be recognized on stage at such event, as requested by Janice, and the Chi. Chapter also publicized such concert by email and on its website.

Upcoming Events.  Fellow Chapter member, Tze-chung (Richard) Li, a leader of the One China Committee, invites all Chapter members, guests and visitors to attend the all-day U.S.-China Relationship in Perspective Forum, on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, an event the Chapter has graciously been invited to, and does, co-sponsor.  The main theme of the forum is the U.S.-China relationship in perspective.  Please email Richard@chiamonline.org for more information and to reserve a spot.

Thanks to Undine Johnson’s suggestion, the November 20 USCPFA Chapter Meeting will be given a guided tour of the new Chinese-American Museum of Chicago by its founding Chinatown Museum Foundation., 238 W. 23rd St., in Chinatown, and its current exhibit, Paper Sons.  CMF members presented on the subject of the exhibit at the Annual China Symposium 2004.  The December 18 meeting is planned to be in Evanston.

Regular Monthly Meetings.  The regular monthly meeting of the USCPFA-Chicago Chapter typically is held on the third Sunday of the month and includes a delicious traditional Chinese multi-course meal, which begins at 2:00 p.m. at the House of Fortune Restaurant, 2407 S. Wentworth Avenue, Chicago.  The meal is typically followed by a talk and Q&A from approximately 3-4 p.m.  All this for only $15 per meeting.  Please attend and bring a friend.                                                                                                           Cfade101605FINALemail
