CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE (CHM)

Dr. Xu will talk about Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) by introducing the “TCM International Science and Technology Fair, China, 2005”, which drew global interest from several dozen nations, including FDA, NIH, Harvard, Yale and others from the US.  Then he will address the following topics: branches of CHM, diseases treated by CHM, therapeutic outcomes of CHM treatments, CHM vs. Western Medicine, herbal safety, genuine herbs, CHM evaluations, professionalism vs. charlatanism, and will provide clinical examples.  A PowerPoint file will be used to assist the presentation.

Dr. Bob Xu received his B.S. degree from Fudan University, M.S. degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, and doctor of Chinese Medicine (CMD) degree from China National CMD Program.  He is the contributor of Chinese Herbal Medicine for the Textbook of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and the first author of the Handbook of Chinese Medicine (to be published).  Currently, he serves as Advisory Board Member at the Tang Center for Herbal Medicine Research, Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago and as the president of the American Chinese Medicine Association (ACMA http://www.AmericanChineseMedicineAssociation.org).  He has successfully treated a variety of diseases and enjoys a favorable reputation among patients in China and US.

Current Events in China Commerce (CECC), a short 5+ minute report, will also be presented by Member, Shi Han, Principal, ChinaLine, at the 1/15 meeting.  Shi’s CECC at the 12/18 Chapter meeting provided advance notice, and explanation, of the increases in natural gas and other regulated prices planned for China starting in 2006, which were reported generally a week or so later in the news media.

            Make your Chinese New Year Reservation now, Chapter members, for the Sat., January 21, 2006 Banquet and Celebration (with entertainment) at Drury Lane Ballroom, 100 Drury Lane, Oakbrook (630/530-8300), starting at 6 p.m., by sending in your check for $40 per person to Association Services, USCPFA New Year, P.O. Box 350, Kenilworth, IL 60043-0350 and mark your check, “USCPFA New Year.”  This Celebration, presented by the Chinese American Association of Greater Chicago, an umbrella organization for Chicagoland Chinese organizations, is typically the largest Chinese New Year Celebration in Chicago, and the USCPFA Chapter is again invited.  Last year, your chapter members filled more than one table (seating 12), and the Chapter has tentatively reserved at least one table, pending receipt of members’ checks by January 14, 2006.  Tickets are limited and available to Chapter members, only, on a first come, first served basis.  Baby sitting service, with dinner, $12 extra per child.

            The Annual Update on China’s WTO Experience and Economy by Chinese Commercial Consul Tian DeYou is scheduled for the February 19 Chapter meeting in Evanston.

            Judaism in China.  Member Beverly Friend, friend@oakton.edu, advises that China’s leading expert on Judaism, Professor Xu Xin of Nanjing University, will be speaking at several venues in Chicagoland in January, including, Israel Through Chinese Eyes at Oakton Community College, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave, Skokie, 1/25 at 9:30 a.m. ($2, 847/635-1411)) and Jewish Congregation 303 Dodge, Evanston, 1/28 at noon (free, 847/328-7678); Jews of Kaifeng, 1/21 eve., Jewish Congregation, 7117 N. Crawford, Lincolnwood (free, 847/676-0491).

The Jan. 15, 2006 meeting is scheduled at the House of Fortune Restaurant, 2407 S. Wentworth Ave., Chinatown.  Typically, the regular monthly Chapter meeting is held on the third Sunday of the month and includes a delicious traditional Chinese multi-course meal, which begins at 2 pm; the hour long luncheon talk (with Q&A) begins at 3 pm; and all this is only $15.  On odd numbered months, the venue for meetings is typically scheduled for Chicago’s Chinatown (e.g., Jan, March, May, etc.); the venue for even numbered months (e.g., Feb, April, June, etc.) is typically scheduled for either Evanston (North Suburban) or Naperville (West Suburban).  Please attend and bring a friend.                                                                                                                               Cfade11505FINALemaREV
